How AI can help separating couples resolve divorce disputes online

A ground-breaking new service has been launched to help separating couples resolve their disagreements online. During its launch phase, this service is offered free of charge (until 1 January 2021).

amica helps couples reach amicable agreements about property settlements and parenting arrangements – and it enables them to record those agreements in plain language.

amica is a secure digital service developed by National Legal Aid and Legal Aid Commissions.

Developed with funding from the Commonwealth Attorney-General’s department, amica has the potential to cut legal bills, reduce pressures on family law courts, and ensure more separating couples have timely access to legal assistance and other support.

amica was designed with direct input from everyday Australians who’ve been through everyday family law disputes. It helps users communicate online with their former partner at their own pace, in their own time and in their own space.

amica guides users through a step-by-step process, and offers them information and support along the way to help them reach an amicable agreement. It also informs them about other support services.

Parenting and property disputes

If you have children, amica can help you work out parenting arrangements that suit your family.

If you need to divide your assets, amica’s artificial intelligence can help. amica provides a suggested split of assets after the AI takes into account:

• your assets and circumstances;
• agreements commonly reached by other couples in similar situations;
• how courts generally handle disputes of this nature.

amica can be used by a broad cross-section of people who require family law information and assistance. Its dispute resolution feature is best suited to couples whose relationship is relatively amicable.
